Focus on Disease Prevention

The blog highlights the latest medical research focused on the prevention of non-communicable and infectious diseases. Non-communicable diseases include, but are not limited to, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, respiratory diseases and cancers. Infectious diseases include, but are not limited to, HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis and sexually transmitted infections. Additional topics which may affect the provision of health and medical services such as brain drain, education and training, and health disparities may also be included.

Address Information Access Barriers

This blog also addresses known and assumed barriers to information access, including the high subscription cost to medical journals; lack of awareness of what is available; lack of relevance of available information; lack of time and incentives to access information; and lack of skills to interpret information.

Open Access Research

All articles highlighted by the blog are available online and open access, distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited. All these articles are peer-reviewed and are published by reputable medical journals. Some of these journals are available through open access publishers such as BioMed Central or Public Library of Science. Other leading journals such as BMJ, JAMA or The Lancet often provide selected articles open access.

Health as a Human Right

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations in 1948, proclaimed that everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of oneself and one’s family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care. The fundamental human right to health may be achieved only when health care providers have access to the right health and medical information needed to deliver the best possible health care.

Whether you are a community health worker, health educator, health advocate, student, nurse, physician assistant, doctor, health policy maker or a patient seeking health information, the Access to Health Information blog may be of benefit by providing you with the most current, peer-reviewed disease prevention information freely available online.
